The dog clothing industry makes up a very large segment of the pet supplies industry. There are clothes that are geared to people that own smaller dogs being more fashion conscious. Some are even made by designers and carry an appropriate price tag as well. However there are clothes for dogs that help to protect and keep safe the working dog such as search and rescue, military and K-9 police officers.


Certainly any dog that has a shorter or thinner coat may require some protection especially if they are asked to perform their duties in colder climates that they may not be used to. The main uses for coats made for working dogs are warmth, protection from rain, Cooling and visual tracking. The clothes that are made for the working dogs fit tighter, are more streamlined and do not have any items on them that would get in a dog's way. The tracking jackets are brighter colors so that the dog can be seen in a thicket or in darker settings. The jackets that keep your dog cool have a filling of absorbent polymer beads that take in water to be able to help in exchanging heat off of the dog.


Floatation devices are essential if the dog spends anytime in the water. The main design of the flotation jackets or life vests help keep the dog buoyant and level in the water reducing the amount of stress placed on the dog so they can swim with less effort and longer. Any water with current of any kind will tire the dog out. Some floatation vest made especially for hunting dogs or search and rescue have extra protection material on the chest area for running through brush or swimming through shallow ponds or streams.

Ballistic vests are used mainly in military or police settings where a dog may get shot at during their duties. These vests are made similar and with like materials as the vests used on humans. They strap under the dog so they can still run and perform with little hindrance.


Other protection items are available for the working dogs. A shoe that protect search and rescue dog’s fitness as they search through rubble that may have hidden any dangers. There is eye protection as well for dogs which provide protection from debris and the sun. Special dog harnesses are available also that have handles allowing the handler to be able to lift the dog when necessary.


The working dog of today is asked to do more and more potentially dangerous jobs. Manufacturers are stepping up to provide dog clothes that help protect and keep comfortable these dogs that provide so many services for their humans.
