Tips for avoiding Dogs Seizures disease

Pets are in most households in the United States. Dogs are a very popular pet. They become a loving family member. Some dogs exhibit health issues throughout their lifetime. Seizures in dogs are quite common. There are different types and causes. There are unique symptoms as well as many treatments for the disorder.

A seizure is basically a disturbance of the sensory processes resulting from not normal electrical impulses in the brain. Dogs can have seizures. There are six basic types of this condition that canines can exhibit. A generalized seizure is just that general. It can be major or considered minor such as petit mal seizures.

A canine can even exhibit a grand mal type which is considered more serious. The animal will initially extend its limbs and lose control of its balance. The petit mal type of seizure is fairly rare in canines. The dog will lose consciousness and its eyes will roll up in its head.

Some canines can suffer from a partial seizure. This effects only part of the body. Many times this type will progress into a generalized one. A complex partial seizure is when the canine will exhibit behavioral issues as well as the seizure. The dog may bite its legs, run around or even become aggressive. A Cluster type seizure is when the animal exhibits several signs of different types of seizures.

When a canine is having a seizure they will go through three types of stages. These stages are known as Pre-Ictal, Ictal and Post-Ictal. The first phase is when an owner may be able to tell the pet is acting differently. They may be anxious, trembling or whining. This phase may be short in duration or could even last a few hours.

The Ictal stage is actually when it is occurring. This range in time and no two are the same. It may only be seconds to minutes. Do not be surprised if the dog has an accident. Sometimes this may occur. They will fall over and stiffen. The final stage in the process is Post-Ictal phase. In this phase, the canine is acting confused or disoriented. They may have blindness for a little while.

When the dog is having one do not panic. Do not hold the dog or restrain him or her. Make sure the area around the animal is kept clear. As with a human, it is important not to put your fingers in the dog’s mouth. He or she may bite and clamp down. Make sure to take away any other animals in close proximity and make contact with your veterinarian if there are complications or questions.

Dogs can have seizures. Being an informed owner is the best way to handle the issue if it were to occur. Do not be afraid but read about the condition. Educate yourself so that your furry friend can receive the care that they deserve. Talk to the vet about any fears, questions or concerns regarding seizures.
